Just-in-Time (JIT) System
The Just-in-Time (JIT) production system ensures that materials are produced or procured only when needed and in the exact required quantity. This minimizes inventory holding costs and eliminates waste.
JIT relies on close coordination with vendors and suppliers, often through long-term agreements to ensure timely delivery.
Kanban System
JIT is often implemented using the Kanban system, which literally means “visual record” in Japanese. It is also referred to as the card system.
Kanban cards or signals are used to trigger production or replenishment, ensuring a pull-based workflow where downstream demand drives upstream activity.
Jidoka: Automation with a Human Touch
Alongside JIT, Jidoka is one of the two foundational pillars of the Toyota Production System.
The term “ji-do-ka” translates to “automation with a human mind”. It emphasizes the ability of machines and workers to detect problems and halt production to prevent defects from propagating.
- Equipment malfunctions
- Quality issues arise
- Work is delayed or improperly executed
This principle fosters a culture of continuous improvement and defect prevention.
