PROCEDURE QUALIFICATION RECORD (PQR)
After the approval of the WPS summary, the welding engineer shall proceed with the welding procedure qualification. The welding engineer shall arrange for the raw materials, welding consumables, welders, NDT subcontractor and TPI. The welding engineer also shall arrange for the mechanical testing of a test coupon at a client-approved lab.

Calibrated Instruments Required Prior to PQR Welding
- AC/DC digital clamp meter (min. 2–3 nos.)
- Digital infrared thermometer (min. 2–3 nos.)
- Digital vernier caliper (1 no.)
- High/low gauge (1 no.)
- Weld inspection gauge (1 no.)
- Stop watch (2–3 nos.)
- Steel measuring tape (5 meters) (2 nos.)
Equipment/Instruments to be Calibrated Prior to PQR Welding
- Welding machines
- Electrode baking oven
- Electrode holding oven
- Flux holding oven
- Electrode quivers
- Argon gas regulators
DOs
- Procure full-length pipe for PQR to have proper material identification.
- Ensure the availability of MTCs while receiving the materials.
- Procure additional quantity of pipes and welding consumables for PQR to meet any PQR failure.
- Issue work orders to NDT subcontractor, TPI and laboratory before starting the PQR activities.
- If the original PQR is to be submitted to client at the end of the project (with final documentation), prepare an additional original set of PQR (welding, NDT and mechanical testing reports) for the PCR’s future project requirement.
- Arrange all calibrated instruments (required for welding PQR).
DON’Ts
- Don’t use inexperienced welders for welding PQR.
- Don’t start the PQR without having all the abovementioned equipment and instruments.
- Don’t call third party in advance if all arrangements are not ready for PQR.
