ISO Standards
SUMMARY
Construction companies that are involved in oil and gas piping and related construction projects should implement the ISO 9001, ISO/TS 29001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and ISO 21500 management systems. Almost 90% of the management-related requirements in oil and gas projects are covered in these five standards; hence, compliance to these standards gives merit to the organizations right from tendering to getting contracts.
These standards will also help the construction companies to ensure trouble-free implementation of quality and oil- and gas-specific requirements as well as ensure environmental, safety and acceptable project management practices in the projects. Top management personnel in construction organizations need to ensure that these standards are implemented in the projects successfully.
Implementation of these standards can help the company to grow as well as identify all the potential problems in the organization to ensure timely corrective and preventive actions. Regulatory officials and clients will value the organization to a greater extent if the organization is certified to these standards.
One important caution is that many construction companies, after getting certified to these standards, do not pay attention to practical implementation at project sites, which often leads to issues recurring in the project, in turn leading to time overruns, cost overruns, quality issues, safety issues and customer complaints. These should be avoided at all costs.
